Film mapping life of mountaineer Jan "Gusta" Havel is being made
An independent documentary film chronicling the life of Czech climber Jan "Gusta" Havel is being directed by climber and filmmaker Lukáš Černý. The film looks back at the history of Czech mountaineering and follows Gusta not only as a witness to a time without artificial walls and modern equipment, but also as an active climber who, even at the age of 75, is still fulfilling his dreams.
Filming took place throughout the year at iconic Czech climbing locations, particularly in Bohemian Paradise, Adršpach, the Jizera Mountains, Věžák, and Skalák. The filmmakers also captured Gusta's home life in Lomnice nad Popelkou, his training on artificial walls and via ferratas, and his return to unfinished projects from past decades.
Among others, climbers Radek Groh, Petr Hejtmánek, and Danny Menšík contributed to the film. The project is being created without major sponsors and is financed mainly from the author's own resources.
The filmmakers are now asking the public for support to enable them to complete the film and possibly continue the story, which will culminate in an expedition to Gusta's dream mountain – the Matterhorn. See the collection on Donio:
