Slovak mountaineer and JAMES exchairman Marián Šajnoha has died
Marián Šajnoha, a prominent Slovak mountaineer and former long-time president of the Slovak Mountaineering Association (SHS JAMES), has died at the age of 86. He was one of the leading figures in Slovak mountaineering during the second half of the 20th century and remained actively involved in its development even after 1989.
Marián Šajnoha has been climbing since 1960. He has completed more than 300 ascents in the High Tatras and has also climbed in the Caucasus and the Alps. He has participated in expeditions to the Hindu Kush and the Himalayas. In 1978, he led an expedition to the north summit of Nanga Parbat, which garnered international attention.
After 1990, he helped revive the activities of SHS JAMES and became its chairman. In addition to climbing, he was active as an author - he wrote several books and technical articles on mountaineering and co-authored the publication “100 Years of JAMES.”
The funeral service for Marián Šajnoha will take place on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the crematorium in Bratislava.
