There is a tip for a bit non traditional trip to winter Alps at three big walls. In the beginning of January we set out to weekend to explore three giant indoor climbing halls to Austria and Bavaria: in Innsbruck, Imst and Munich.

We enjoyed it a much - I had feeling like after a climbing weekened in Frankenjura or Arco. The walls were to 22 metre hight, routes even 28 metres long, we tried uncommon long overhangs. 

Take a long rope enough, they noticed us in Imst, it should not be much shorter than 50 metres.

Thay belay with ATC mostly or figure eight. In Imst they dont want to allowe to belay with gri-gri, thay had some bad experience with this device.

We went there by car from Prague throught Pilsen (Plzeň) via Germany around Munich (Muenchen) to Innsbruck (Austria) and than we were till night in Imst (Austria). The second day we went to Munich (Muenchen, Germany). The return way from and to Prague was altogather about 1300 km.

The entrance fee costs us from 7 to 10 Euro per person. We could use a discount as members of Austrian Alpenverien (Climbing union) in Munich. The pricelists are linked below.

Innsbruck

Kletterzentrum Tivoli - Climbing centre Tivoli

The walls to 17 metres hight, overhangs to 9 metres, the longest routes to 25 metres. 120 routes in difficulty from 3 to 11- UIAA. There is boulder gym and bar.
 
The afternoon entrance fee from 2pm to 6pm we paid 7,60 Eura.

The wall is in hall at Tivoli Stadium, in street Stadionstraße close to winter stadium not far from higway accross Innsbruck.

Imst

Kletterhalle Imst - Climbing hall Imst

The walls to hight 22 metres, the lenght of the routes to 28 metres, about 100 routes in difficulty 2- to 10+ UIAA. There are several boulder gyms, bar and climbing equipment and guidebooks shop.

The walls are built in pyramide hall in nontraditional architectonic solution. The pyramide is seen from the road from Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany) to Landek (Austria). There are World Cup competition on the wall, the world climbing elite goes to train there including World Champion Tomas Mrazek, among the route setters is Angela Eiter. The wall was financed by local government and the town Imst become to be famous becouse of it world wide, as the hall keeper Mrs. Susi Knabl, the main judge of UIAA sport climbing, explained us.

The daily entrance fee is 7 Euro.

The wall is in walley part of the town, southeast from the main road and downtown. It is marked by many notices to "Sportzentrum".

Munich

Kletterzentrum München - Climbing Centre Munich

The walls to height of 18 metres. The routes in grade 2+ to 10+ UIAA. It is said as the largest climbing centre in Europe. Except the indoor walls there are climbing facilities outdoor. Concrete towers and walls around the buildings.  Munich concrete towers belong to the world oldest.

Members of climbing unions (even foreign) have entrance fee for 10 Euro, the others 13,50 Euro.

The wall is in southeast part of the city close to metro stop Brudermühlstraße, not far from highway round ring Mittlerer Ring at street Thalkirchner Straße.
